Counselling for Adults and Children

Helping you to become the person you want to be.

I am an Integrative Counsellor and BACP Registered member -  MBACP 39398.  I have experience helping clients with stress and anxiety, trauma and abuse, childhood trauma, parenting issues, plus self esteem and confidence.  I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity and compassion.  I will tailor our dialogue to meet you unique and specific requirements.  It takes courage to seek help to achieve a happier and more fulfilling life.  I am her to support you on this journey.
I am also trained to work with children using art and play therapy. Children often find the world a scary place. Covid for instance could result in a fear of germs which makes it hard for the child to interact with other children. Or terrorism highlighted in the news could bring up a fear of the bad people. The child then needs to be reminded of the good people who are always there to help even in a bad situation.
Additional areas of focus include LGBT, grief, coping with life changes, adoption and foster care, attachment issues, domestic violence, and family of origin issues.

I started my journey towards becoming a counsellor as a foster carer.  I could not understand why my foster children actively fought against the love and care I wanted to give them.  So I did an Open University Degree to look at what is normal development in a child and then what happens when they are traumatised.  Things that fascinated me were attachment theory and how the brain develops when deprived off love (specifically the case study of Romanian children left without love or even the most basic forms of caring in orphanages).  Having achieved as BSc Degree I moved on to a counselling Diploma with CPCAB which being Integrative, encompassed lots of different types of the therapy.  The main ones were Person Centred, Psychodynamic and CBT.  Psychodynamic was of particular interest as it looks at how trauma and the messages we receive from adults in our childhood continue to impact us as adults.  I wanted to help heal that traumatised child trapped in the adult of today.

I have worked over the years with many children as a foster carer and also as a child therapist in a school in the Wirral.  I have also worked with adults as a counsellor ranging in age from 18 to those in their 70's

Understanding, empathetic, challenging, very caring. Great counsellor. Helped me loads. Its been a long path that brought me to her door. Sonja helped me realise that I view my past - not accurately.

Hi Sonja ..... I feel our sessions have helped me to find a good perspective of a few of the issues I have struggling with, and I am going to work on maintaining that focus and taking a few steps in a slightly new direction. I will probably be back .... and hope I can request .. you again.
