Counselling for Adults and Children

Helping you to become the person you want to be.

I am an Integrative Counsellor and a registered member of the BACP (MBACP 39398), with extensive experience supporting clients facing stress and anxiety, trauma and abuse, childhood trauma, parenting challenges, as well as self-esteem and confidence issues. My approach is grounded in respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I tailor our sessions to meet your unique needs. Seeking help is a courageous step toward a happier and more fulfilling life, and I am here to support you on that journey.
In addition, I am trained to work with children through art and play therapy, creating a safe space for them to express their emotions and fears. For instance, events like the COVID pandemic may lead to fears of germs, making social interaction challenging. Similarly, exposure to news about terrorism may cause fear of “bad people.” In such cases, it’s important to help children focus on the good people who are there to support and protect them, even in difficult situations.
I also focus on areas such as LGBTQ+ concerns, grief, coping with life changes, adoption and foster care, attachment issues, domestic violence, and family of origin challenges.

My journey toward becoming a counsellor began during my time as a foster carer. I was deeply puzzled by why some of my foster children resisted the love and care I wanted to provide. This curiosity led me to pursue a degree with the Open University, where I explored the fundamentals of child development and the profound impact of trauma. I was particularly fascinated by attachment theory and how the brain develops when deprived of love, including the heart-wrenching case studies of Romanian children in orphanages who were neglected of even the most basic care.
After earning my BSc degree, I furthered my education with a Counselling Diploma from CPCAB. This integrative training covered various therapeutic approaches, including Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, and CBT. I found Psychodynamic therapy particularly compelling because it examines how childhood trauma and the messages we receive from adults continue to influence us throughout our lives. My passion lies in helping to heal the traumatised child that often remains within the adult.
Over the years, I have gained extensive experience working with children as both a foster carer and a child therapist in a school on the Wirral. Additionally, I have had the privilege of counselling adults across a wide age range, from 18 to individuals in their 70s. My diverse experience has deepened my understanding of the unique challenges people face at different stages of life.

Understanding, empathetic, challenging, very caring. Great counsellor. Helped me loads. Its been a long path that brought me to her door. Sonja helped me realise that I view my past - not accurately.

Hi Sonja ..... I feel our sessions have helped me to find a good perspective of a few of the issues I have struggling with, and I am going to work on maintaining that focus and taking a few steps in a slightly new direction. I will probably be back .... and hope I can request .. you again.
